From Scarcity to a Campus of Hope

On Tucson’s northwest side, The Gathering at Tucson is helping transform a five‑acre Campus of Hope into a place where neighbors find food, jobs, spiritual care, and a pathway to long‑term stability.

In Tucson’s 05 ZIP code, many families live with persistent food insecurity, limited job opportunities, and the wear and tear of generational poverty. Seniors, foster families, and low‑income households often struggle to access basic resources in one place, let alone find a community that cares for their whole person.

In response, The Gathering at Tucson joined with GAP Ministries and other local partners to imagine something more than a single program. Together they envisioned a Campus of Hope where food, workforce development, reentry support, and spiritual care could live side by side.

“To see people come to our campus for our services and find a Campus of Hope not only for their spiritual needs, but for their entire person.” — Demetrius Miles, Lead Pastor

Today, that vision is rooted in a five‑acre campus with five buildings designed to meet the community’s practical and spiritual needs.

A Five‑Acre Campus Serving the Whole Person

The Campus of Hope is home to a community warehouse, the 05 Market, a commercial kitchen, a visitation center for foster families, vocational training spaces, and multiple churches committed to advancing the Kingdom together. On a typical day, roughly 500 people receive free food, household items, and access to a deeply discounted market.

Families arrive for groceries and discover job training opportunities, reentry support, and a worshiping community in the same place. Foster families use the visitation center to reconnect with children in a setting that feels safe, welcoming, and dignified.

“They receive spiritual nourishment, natural sustenance, and a multitude of resources.” — Demetrius Miles

Two congregations on the campus provide ongoing spiritual care, prayer, and a visible witness of the gospel at the heart of this work.

Partners Around the Table

The Gathering at Tucson is not doing this alone. GAP Ministries, the Flowing Wells School District, the Arizona Department of Economic Security (DES), and the City of Tucson each play a role in expanding the campus’s reach and impact.

The church’s relationship with GAP Ministries has grown over the years, becoming fully aligned in 2020 when they moved together onto the five‑acre property. Since then, hundreds of people are being served weekly on several different levels, from food access to vocational training to spiritual support.

“We’ve seen what’s possible when churches, nonprofits, and public agencies surrender their silos to serve the city together.” — Campus leader

A Witness Shaped by Surrender

Along the way, Pastor Demetrius has been especially encouraged by how leaders from different churches and ministries have chosen to lay down ego for the sake of the city.

“I’ve been encouraged by the leadership’s heart posture to surrender our egos and personal agendas for a great move of God in our community and region.” — Demetrius Miles

That posture has reshaped The Gathering at Tucson’s sense of mission. The Campus of Hope helps the church live into its call to make a positive impact in its sphere of influence, not only on Sundays but throughout the week.

Looking Ahead

As partnerships deepen and more neighbors find their way to the Campus of Hope, The Gathering at Tucson sees ongoing opportunities for gospel transformation. Personal testimonies of change, renewed connection to faith, and a clear Christ‑like witness are already emerging from this shared work.

The prayer now is that this five‑acre campus will continue to be a place where people in the 05 ZIP code and across Tucson experience hope—in their cupboards, in their work, and in their walk with God.
